Dancers to perform at national festival

A group of dancers from Powys will take to the stage at the Southbank Centre in London next weekend having been selected to take part in this year's biggest youth dance festival.

Eight female dancers representing the Powys Youth Dance Company (PYDC) aged between 11 and 17 years old will perform a seven minute long piece at U.Dance 2012, which showcases some of the best youth dance groups from all across the UK.

Back in February the group took part in a regional event at the Taliesin Theatre in Swansea, and were one of two companies invited to represent Wales at the national festival, which takes place between 13 and 15 July.

PYDC are performing on the 15th in the Royal Festival Hall, which seats around 2,500 and a large crowd is expected to support the girls, who will spend the other days participating in dance workshops run by professionals.

Myfanwy Alexander, Cabinet Member for Learning and Leisure at Powys County Council, said: "Dance is fast becoming a cultural strength for the communities of Powys and PYDC are showcasing this development on a national stage.

“To have Powys dancers on the stage of the Royal Festival Hall in such a prestigious event raises the profile of dance and the group deserves great commendation for their achievement."
