Trade waste collection benefits for businesses

Powys businesses are being encouraged to take advantage of new arrangements to trade waste collections that would save them money whilst helping boost recycling rates.

Traders in Llandrindod and Brecon will be visited by Powys County Council staff over the coming weeks who will inform them of the options put in place to help the council reach its recycling targets, whilst helping businesses see the benefits of using the council’s collection services.

All businesses have a legal obligation for disposing their waste and cannot use the domestic arrangements to do so; however one option available for traders is a version of the new household recycling collection service where special trade recycling containers are collected from the kerbside. This will also help the council to maximise efficiencies by using the same vehicles.

The price of a Trade Recycling Permit has also been reduced by 46% from £186 to £100 in order to encourage businesses to drop off recyclable waste at Household Waste Recycling Centres, which allows them to recycle a wider range of materials than the kerbside service.

Also, for just £35 per year companies can purchase a permit to recycle waste at Community Recycling Sites, such as those in supermarket and village hall car parks.

In a further drive to increase recycling, the prices for recycling bags and bins have been frozen, whereas the price for residual trade waste has been increased to take account of the increasing cost of disposal including the escalating landfill tax.

Steve Holdaway, Head of Local and Environmental Services at Powys County Council, said: “We are committed to recycling as much of the county’s waste as possible, and as the new household service is taking shape across the county, businesses are our next target.

“We feel that these options give traders plenty of freedom as to how they wish to recycle of their waste, and we hope they take advantage of the cheaper recycling rates in these harsh economic times.

“With businesses saving money whilst helping us reach our 52% target as set by the Welsh Government, it’s a win-win situation for everyone involved.”
