Animal Welfare
Our Responsibilities
We have a duty to:
- Protect the health and welfare of animals at farms, in transit and at markets
- Protect the health and welfare of companion animals
- Prevent, control and eradicate animal diseases
- Ensure that animal movements can be traced to safeguard human and animal health from transmitted disease
- Ensure that feeding stuffs are produced, transported, stored and used hygienically
- Ensure that plants and animals destined for the food chain are protected from contamination which may harm human health.
We also deal with the licencing of boarding kennels and catteries, dog breeding, riding stables, zoos, and animals requiring a licence under the Dangerous Wild Animals Act.
Farm animal movements and identification
There are strict rules which govern the movement of farm animals to prevent the spread of disease. Each animal must be identifiable, so that their movements can be checked.
In the event of a disease outbreak the precise location of all livestock is essential for effective measures to control and eradicate highly contagious viruses.
To try and stop the spread of disease there are strict rules controlling the identification and movements of livestock. These rules apply to you even if you only keep one animal of the species covered.

A guidance leaflet has been produced for show organisers and those taking livestock to shows.
