
A wealth of local history material is held across the county by different services of the County Council. We outline here the type of material held and where it be found.
The Archives service holds extensive collections of documents, maps and other primary source material for the whole of the county at the County Archives Office in Llandrindod Wells. To find out more about the holdings and how to access them visit the Archives website.
The branch libraries across Powys hold a small amount of local studies material (mainly reference books) and of course have online connections to the increasing amount of local studies material available on the internet.
At Newtown, Llandrindod Wells and Brecon branches however, there are local studies collections for the old counties of Montgomeryshire, Radnorshire and Breconshire respectively. To find out more click here
There are a number of museums across the county which as well as exhibiting local history displays, offer offportunities for research.

The Museums, Libraries and Archives services create exhibitions on different aspects of the history and heritage of Powys. As these exhibitions are often only available for a temporary period due to pressures on exhibition space, we aim to make some of them available here.

As local planning authority for Powys excluding the National Park, Planning Services is responsible for the preparation of the Unitary Development Plan for Powys, for determining planning and related applications under the Town and Country Planning Act and for the conservation and protection of the built environment. The County Council is responsible for the administration of the Building Regulations throughout Powys including the National Park area situated within Powys.
The County Council delivers Planning services through Shire Committees and offices based at Neuadd Brycheiniog in Brecon, The Gwalia in Llandrindod Wells and Neuadd Maldwyn in Welshpool.

Over the last few years the County Archives Office has run a successful research service for those who are unable to travel to travel to the office. This service how been extended to offer research in the Breconshire and Montgomeryshire collections at Brecon and Newtown libraries.

Staff at Brecon and Newtown libraries have been working with local and family history groups to produce newsletters for Breconshire (Hanes) and Montgomeryshire (Hanes Maldwyn). Here you will find articles of local interest, details of local projects, and listings of local talks and activities.
