Are there alternatives to making a nuisance complaint?

Nuisance problems can be resolved informally by having a chat with the person causing the nuisance. It may be that this person is unaware that they are causing you a problem. If you let them know that you are experiencing a problem then you give them an opportunity to deal with the nuisance without the need to make a formal complaint.

Powys Mediation, a local mediation service, can help in the resolution of neighbour disputes.

There may be occasions when you don’t want to approach a neighbour directly and if so, you can make a complaint about nuisance to the Council.

How do I make a nuisance complaint?

Complaints can be made to Environmental Health in the following ways:

  • in person at our offices
  • by telephone
  • by letter
  • by e-mail.

Your complaint should include the following information:

  • Your name and address and (where possible) a daytime phone number.
  • The address (or site) where the nuisance is coming from and the type of nuisance.
  • When and how long the nuisance occurs.
  • The way the nuisance affects you (e.g. bonfire smoke stops you sitting in your garden).
  • Anything you have done to try and deal with the problem (e.g. speaking to the person causing the nuisance).
  • Any information on landlord details [if relevant].

Details of your name and address will be kept in the strictest confidence.
