Sustainable Development in Powys

Looking to the Future...

What sort of world would you like to leave your children and grandchildren?

What would you like the world to be like in 10, 20, 50 years time?

Sustainable Development

Cycling in Elan Valley

Sustainable Development is about living in a way respects and values the environment and enriches communities both now and in the future. The Council’s Sustainable Development Strategy describes it as meaning that, “…we can make progress towards a world where we seek to simultaneously progress social, economic and environmental goals and policies in ways that develop and maintain a good quality of life for us all and enable future generations to do the same.” While the Powys Change Plan defines it as, “Understanding, recognising and responding to the total impact of our decisions, on current and future generations.”

Glasu, is a Rural Development Plan funded organisation with an aim to support a sustainable future for the people of Powys. Glasu works in the following areas: food, low carbon and renewables, culture, heritage, local products, events and tourism. For more information visit the Glasu web site.

Welsh Assembly Government

The Welsh Assembly Government is one of a handful of administrations in the world with a duty to promote sustainable development. In its latest Sustainable Development Scheme, One Wales: One Planet, it describes sustainable development as the ‘central organising principle, of the Assembly and the public sector in Wales.

The Assembly has produced their Sustainable Development Charter as a way of demonstrating this way of working, and recognising bodies which have made a commitment to trying to do the same. Powys County Council signed up to the Charter in August 2010.

Powys Community

Although much of the work undertaken happens inside the Council, there are links with the community of Powys. The Powys Community Strategy is committed to sustainability principles and aims to work in partnership to provide better services for Powys. The Powys Environmental Partnership, which is one of five thematic partnerships working within the Community Strategy, aims to promote and enhance the environment of Powys. They even have a scheme providing small grants to community groups to improve their local surroundings.

Powys also has several Transition Towns, but they could equally be any community, investigating how to respond to the “pressures of climate change, fossil fuel depletion and increasingly, economic contraction."

There are plenty of other local community and voluntary groups doing really interesting and innovative work in this area. For more information and to find out if there’s a group near you the PAVO web site is a useful place to start.
