Family History Certificates

If you are new to researching Family History, there are several excellent websites, magazines and books that can guide you.  The  links (shown in the column on the right) will take you, to areas of the internet, that may be able to assist you in your quest.

All the registers, for births, deaths and marriages, which took place in Powys from 1837, are now held at the Registration Office, The Gwalia, Llandrindod Wells, LD1 6AA.  For other resources contact Powys Archives office.

Applications for family history certificates can be made by, either writing to the address shown above or emailing the details to  family.history.certificates@powys.gov.uk.   Please include a daytime telephone number where we can reach you, as we may need to contact you, if we have any queries.

Alternatively you can telephone 0845 602 7038 or 01597 827468.  Please do not telephone individual Registration Offices for these certificates.

When requesting family history certificates we will need to know the following information:

  • Full name of the individual(s) concerned
  • Date and place of birth/death/marriage.
  • If possible, parent’s names, as these help us verify what we may find in the registers.

Unfortunately, without this information, it will not be possible to trace the individuals you are seeking.

Our staff will make a search of up to one year, on either side, of the given date.  There are several genealogy websites, that can be accessed for either a one off fee, pay as you go fee, or are completely free, which can assist you in your searches.

Family History enquiries are dealt with in the order of their receipt.   However, requests for certificates for legal purposes, pensions, passports etc will take precedence.

For event priors to 1837, you should contact the Powys Archives office. Alternatively Family History Societies are an invaluable source of information.
