Programmes of study
Programmes of study set out what pupils should be taught in physical education at each key stage, and provide the basis for planning schemes of work.

At Key Stage 1, the programme is divided into three areas of activity:

  • Games
  • Gymnastic activities
  • Dance.

 

At Key Stage 2, there are six areas of activity and of these pupils should be taught:

  • Games
  • Gymnastic activities
  • Dance
  • Swimming.

 

and either

Athletic activities or Outdoor and adventurous activities.

At Key Stage 3, there are six areas of activity:

  • Games
  • Gymnastic activities
  • Dance
  • Swimming
  • Athletic activities
  • Outdoor and adventurous activities.

 

Of these, pupils should be taught games, and at least one area of activity from each of

  • gymnastic activities and dance
  • swimming, athletic activities and outdoor adventurous activities.

At Key Stage 4, the programme is divided into four areas of experience:

  • sport
  • dance
  • adventure activities
  • exercise activities.

A health-related exercise programme must also be addressed during the key stage.

Dragon Sport is a Sports Council for Wales initiative designed to offer Primary aged children, 7-11yrs, fun, safe and enjoyable sporting opportunities.
