Programmes of study
Programmes of study set out what pupils should be taught in mathematics at each key stage, and provide the basis for planning schemes of work.

At Key Stage 1, the programme of study is divided into three sections. These are:

• Using and applying mathematics
• Number
• Shape, space and measures.
  

At Key Stage 2, the programme of study is divided into four sections. These are:

• Using and Applying Mathematics
• Number
• Shape, Space and Measures
• Handling Data.
  

At Key Stage 3 and 4, the programme of study is divided into five sections. These are:

• Using and Applying Mathematics
• Number
• Algebra
• Shape, Space and Measures
• Handling Data.
  

Within these sections, mathematical ideas are developed progressively across the key stages.
