The Canal at Powysland

The Montgomery Canal at Welshpool

The Montgomery Canal

In the early 19th century there was a small warehouse at Welshpool Canal Wharf - now the south corner of the present building. During the last quarter of the century the Canal Company decided to enlarge it. Marks in the interior woodwork show that it was extensively enlarged around 1889 to encompass what is now the museum

Outside the museum, the technology and architecture of the local section and its buildings offer an insight into the working of the canal in its heyday. A canal trail, which is easily accessible on foot on flat, paved ground reveals the workings of the Welshpool Town Lock and its associated waterwheel.

School parties can book a short guided walk along the canal

Inside the museum the permanent display on the Montgomery Canal, situated in the museum's first galley, covers the social and economic history of the waterway. A quiz sheet for the family,or for schools, is available.

Belan Locks

A short walk to the north of the museum, the Lledan Brook Aqueduct can be seen. This is a cast iron trough which replaced the old stone masonry structure. The older technology failed in this area of the Severn Valley. An information sheet on this part of the canal walk is available.

Belan Locks can be found two miles to the south of Welshpool. The two locks, by-pass weir and adjacent lime kilns are well worth a visit
