Bulky household rubbish is not collected by the weekly rubbish collection vehicles and so householders must find an alternative way to dispose of unwanted bulky items.
The Council operates a collection service for residents who wish to dispose of bulky items such as furniture or electrical appliances. There is a charge for the service calculated as follows:
Items weighing up to 50kg which can be easily moved by two operatives
Items weighing in excess of 50kg
If you have less than six items to collect you can reduce your costs by sharing a collection with a neighbour.
If you are paying by debit or credit card please contact the Customer Contact Centre on 0845 602 7035 to place an order. We will then provide you with a reference number and a specified collection date which will normally be within 2 weeks of contacting us.
If you are paying by cash or cheque you will have to visit your local Customer Service Point who will provide you with a form to complete and take your payment. You will then be contacted within 48 hours with a booking date.
To find out where your nearest local Customer Service Point is please call 0845 602 7035.
Any items which can be re-used or refurbished will be forwarded to a local reuse group, and items that are not suitable for reuse will be recycled, including timber, metal and glass. Any materials that can not be reused or recycled will be sent to landfill.
There are two ways of getting rid of your items at no cost:
Phoenix is a registered non-profit making charity based in Newtown and specialise in collecting donated furniture, household effects and electrical items from the public. These are then cleaned and sorted before being passed on to Powys residents looking to furnish their homes.
The team will collect for free any unwanted and reusable furniture such as beds, wardrobes, sofas and tables or electrical appliances such as fridges, washing machines and microwaves. They even collect faulty equipment that can be repaired before being sold on.
This is a great way to ensure any perfectly good furniture or equipment doesn't end up in landfill, and help someone who is unable to buy brand new items.
