Animal Welfare

Our Responsibilities

We have a duty to:

  • Protect the health and welfare of animals at farms, in transit and at markets
  • Protect the health and welfare of companion animals
  • Prevent, control and eradicate animal diseases
  • Ensure that animal movements can be traced to safeguard human and animal health from transmitted disease
  • Ensure that feeding stuffs are produced, transported, stored and used hygienically
  • Ensure that plants and animals destined for the food chain are protected from contamination which may harm human health.

From the 1st October 2008 we also deal with enquiries relating to the licencing of boarding kennels and catteries, dog breeding, riding stables, animals requiring a licence under the Dangerous Wild Animals Act and zoo licencing.
