There is an accredited Condom Card Scheme in Powys run by Youth Services, School Nurses and other youth organisations. If you are under 25 and need sexual health advice or condoms, please see the information below.

How effective are condoms?

Male condoms are 86 – 98% effective at preventing pregnancy, as long as they are put on correctly, are in date, have a kite mark or CE mark and have been stored properly so there are no rips in them. They have the added bonus of protecting you against sexually transmitted infections.

What do I do if the condom breaks?

Emergency contraception is available to women who have had unprotected sex. If a condom splits or comes off, you should get emergency contraception as soon as possible. Most people know emergency contraception as the ‘morning after pill’ but it can be taken up to 72 hours after unprotected sex – although the sooner it is taken the more effective it is. Even after 72 hours there are still other options available which can be effective up to 5 days after, so if you’ve had unprotected sex, don’t be put off going for help.

You can get emergency contraception from:

• High street chemists/pharmacies

• Your doctor

• Sexual health clinics

*Other forms of emergency contraception after 72 hours are also available from these places.

A C-Card allows young people under 25 to get free condoms from places displaying the C-Card logo. You can get a C-Card by going to a C-Card Registration site. The person giving you the card will find a quiet, private place to talk to you about relationships, sexual health and how to use condoms. They’ll be happy to answer any questions about your relationships, sexual health or put you in touch with someone who can help you. This will take 20–30 minutes.

Your C-card will just have a unique number which helps us record how many young people are using the scheme. Once you have a C-card you’ll be able to get condoms by showing your card at any place that displays the C-Card logo in Wales.

If you don’t have your card with you or if you’ve lost it you won’t be able to get any condoms until you’ve re-registered or found your card.

You can register for a c-card with any school nurse or youth worker in Powys – Pop along to their drop in’s to find out more.

Or visit your local youth club to find out more or register.

The purpose of The C-Card Scheme is:

  • To offer sexual health advice
  • To provide info about respectful relationships and safer sex
  • To give advice and condoms if needed
  • To help stop STIs (sexually transmitted infections) being passed on
  • To help reduce the number of unintended teenage pregnancies
