National Trading Standards Estate Agency Team

The National Trading Standards Estate Agency Team of Powys County Council is the UK’s regulator under the Estate Agents Act 1979.

The Estate Agents Act 1979 regulates estate agency work. Its purpose is to make sure that estate agents act in the best interests of their clients, and that both buyers and sellers are treated honestly, fairly and promptly.

The National Trading Standards Estate Agency Team is responsible for:

  • issuing individual banning or warning orders under the Act
  • maintaining a public register of such banning or warning orders
  • approving and monitoring consumer redress scheme
  • providing generic advice and guidance on estate agency matters, in conjunction with Citizen’s Advice, the Chartered Trading Standards Institute and other partner agencies

What we don't do:

The National Trading Standards Team does not:

  • mediate or arbitrate in individual complaints between estate agents and consumers.
  • award civil redress to aggrieved parties.
  • conduct ‘routine’ investigations outside of its remit in issuing prohibition or warning orders under the Estate Agency Act 1979
