Under Section 139 of the Housing (Wales) Act 2014, the Council has determined to charge a Council tax premium of 50% on long-term empty properties and periodically occupied properties with effect from the 1st April 2017.
Uninhabited, unfurnished, empty, or uninhabitable properties may be exempt from Council Tax. Specific types of properties are also exempt when they are dedicated solely to a special purpose, such as only housing students or armed forces personnel.
We want to see as many empty homes as possible within Powys returned to use and we have developed various financial packages as an incentive to bring them back into use. Empty properties can affect the community and pose many problems such as attracting pests and anti-social behaviour.
