The Severn Valley Welsh Medium Primary School - a new flagship community focused school with the ability to deliver the very best standard of Welsh medium primary school education in Powys.
Work on Newtown’s new home for its Welsh Medium primary is on target for its opening day on Monday January 11th.
Decoration work is coming to a close on the inside of the new Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd building ready for the school to move in, in January.
Headteacher, Sian Davies, commented: "This is our vision becoming a reality. Finally, after years of discussion, Welsh medium education deservedly has a purposeful building in the Newtown area. I would like to thank everyone who supported us from day 1 and I look forward to seeing a greater growth of pupils receiving Welsh medium education in the near future.”
The school, designed for up to 300 pupils, has been part funded by Welsh Government with the rest from Powys County Council.
Councillor Arwel Jones, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Schools with Powys County Council added: “I’m delighted to see that we’re almost there with this wonderful new building – designed to very high energy-saving standards – and I would like to wish the pupils, staff and governors all the best when they move to their new home in January.”
The new school will be situated adjacent to Newtown High School building and will replace the existing Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd Primary school. The School is designed for up to 300 pupils.
The new school will be one of a new generation of energy efficient schools where the reduction of carbon emissions and sustainable development is the main driving force. Passive Energy sources will be used as much as possible.
Plans for the building have considered principles such as clearly defined access contours, segregating areas where pupils play from vehicle parking areas and defining the zones which pupils, staff and visitors can access the school without compromising security. Other considerations have included hard and soft landscaping, opportunities for outdoor teaching and group activities, natural light and ventilation and maximising the use of free solar energy.
We are aiming to open the new school on 11th January 2016.
