Get help with learning disability

A learning disability affects the way someone learns new things. It affects every part of their life. People with learning disabilities can find it harder to understand information and communicate with others.

What is a learning disability?

People with learning disabilities may have problems:

  • understanding new or complex information
  • learning new skills
  • coping independently

A learning disability can be mild, moderate or severe. Some people with a mild learning disability can talk easily and look after themselves, but take a bit longer than usual to learn new skills.

Someone with a severe learning disability may not be able to communicate at all and may need a lot of help with day to day living.

If you are someone with a learning disability, or a family member, friend or supporter, there is information and help available, and Adult Social Care can put you in touch with a wide range of services which help people with learning difficulties be as independent as possible.

How do I get help?

To find out what exactly your needs are, we have to carry out an assessment. You can have a friend or family member there to support you.

Learning Disability Commissioning Strategy

We are pleased to present this first integrated plan for learning disability services in Powys. It was produced after talking to people about what they said they need. See how your views influenced the final strategy here

The purpose of this plan is to say how Powys County Council Adult Social Care and Powys Teaching Health Board will meet the needs of adults with learning disabilities.

Our aim is to change the health care and wellbeing for people with learning disabilities over the next five years. Powys wants to make the lives for people with learning disabilities better. We will do this by using person centred planning to meet their needs and choices.
